Leaf litter decomposition in tropical freshwater swamp forests is slower in swamp than non?swamp conditions

چکیده

Decomposition is a key ecosystem function, and the rate of decomposition in forests affects their carbon storage potentials. Processes factors determining leaf litter rates dry-land temperate are well understood, but these generally poorly studied tropical wetland forests, especially freshwater swamp (FSF). The home-field advantage (HFA) hypothesis predicts that soil microbes specialize decomposing produced by tree species immediate vicinity. However, empirical support for HFA equivocal, has never been tested highly heterogeneous biodiverse ecosystems FSFs. We collected from non-swamp FSF Singapore monitored plots period eight months. Leaf decomposed 3.7 times more slowly plots. were significantly poorer quality (higher C:N ratio) than those species, this had only weak effect on rates. There was also evidence conditions. Our results show while differ chemical traits, ultimately determined local abiotic conditions, such as hydrology. Additionally, high diversity may prevent decomposer communities specializing any group types thus limit extent observed forests.

Controls over leaf litter decomposition in wet tropical forests.

Tropical forests play a substantial role in the global carbon (C) cycle and are projected to experience significant changes in climate, highlighting the importance of understanding the factors that control organic matter decomposition in this biome. Recycling of phenolic compounds in Borneo’s tropical peat swamp forests

BACKGROUND Tropical peat swamp forests (TPSF) are globally significant carbon stores, sequestering carbon mainly as phenolic polymers and phenolic compounds (particularly as lignin and its derivatives) in peat layers, in plants, and in the acidic blackwaters. Previous studies show that TPSF plants have particularly high levels of phenolic compounds which inhibit the decomposition of organic mat...

Do ectomycorrhizas alter leaf-litter decomposition in monodominant tropical forests of Guyana?

This work tested the hypothesis that ectomycorrhizas (EM) of Dicymbe corymbosa alter leaf-litter decomposition and residual litter quality in tropical forests of Guyana. Mass loss of leaf litter in litter bags was determined on three occasions, in two experiments, during a 12-month period. Paired root-exclusion plots were located randomly within a D. corymbosa forest. Both D. corymbosa and mixe...
